Why does the priest’s chair compete for attention with the altar. Looks positively Presbyterian.

Because it’s been restored to its dark original; the original white gothic altars, etc. were removed and lost in the seventies;
the new altar, ambo and rerodos were 2002 centennial projects carved in Italian Carerra marble.
